The chief inspector of the constabulary has backed moves by the Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner to force out the suspended chief constable, according to the BBC.
Sir Thomas Windsor has been consulted over PCC Sue Mountstevens' plans to call upon disgraced Nick Gargan to resign.
Although the desicion has been referred to Sir Thomas' office, his response has not yet been confirmed.
BBC understands that a letter backed Ms Mountstevens' decision.
The decision will go to the local police and crime panel, however the final say will be from Sue Mountstevens.
Nick Gargan was suspended back in May 2014 over allegations of inappropriate behaviour towards female staff.
