A CHARITY set up in memory of a South Somerset schoolgirl is celebrating after a successful start to 2018.

The Jemima Layzell Trust was set up after Horton teenager Jemima Layzell died from a brain aneurysm aged 13 in 2012 and raises money to support children and young people with brain injury or trauma.

First, Sophy Layzell, Jemima’s mum, received news that a French magazine for teenagers had voted her daughter as a teenager who most inspired respect and interest most in 2017.

Jemima pipped 19-year-old French footballer Kylian Mbappe to the top spot after he signed for Paris St Germain for more than £160m last year. Sophy described a vote as “an amazing accolade.”

The magazine news was followed by an update from a trust sponsor, 12-year-old Ellie, who has been taking part in the World Transplant Games.

Sophy said: “When Ellie was only three months old, she spent a gruelling four months in hospital having chemotherapy.

“During this time her parents couldn’t kiss or cuddle their baby due to the high risk of infection.

“Ellie had been diagnosed with a rare childhood liver cancer, and at seven months she then underwent a nine-hour liver transplant.

“Ellie, now 12, is a fabulous advocate for organ donation. She received some kidney damage from the chemotherapy, but daily medication and a careful diet keep her well.”

Antony Greenwood, Ellie’s dad, said: “She is home from an amazing week having learned new skills, met new friends from around the world and with a new confidence boost all thanks to a wonderful sponsor and some amazing people.”
