Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP) and its contractor Viridor plan to reopen recycling sites on Monday or earlier if conditions are suitable and the safety of the public and staff is assured.

Clearance work has begun and some sites have already reopened, but Viridor staff will have to make sure each site is safe, so the public is asked to be patient if sites reopen later than scheduled.

As sites reopen, updates will be posted on SWP's website at www.somersetwaste.gov.uk, and on the SomersetWaste Facebook page and Twitter feed.

Weather and road conditions permitting, from 7am Monday crews will pick up Friday's 80,000 delayed kerbside collections of recycling and rubbish.

A final decision on waste collections will be made late tonight (Sunday, March 4) after a review of the situation with collections contractor Kier.

SWP praised Kier and Viridor staff for their "incredible effort" in "challenging conditions" last week, completing all work on Thursday before the weather closed in.

A SWP statement said: "Weather and safety permitting, by Monday or before we plan to have all recycling sites open again, and to start carring out the delayed kerbside collections from Friday.

"Work at the sites will begin early but please be patient if, for the public's safety, some sites take longer to be cleared and so reopen later than scheduled.

"If you are planning a recycling site visit, see our website, Facebook page or Twitter feed for the latest updates and check the weather and traffic situation before setting out.

"Please stay safe: many recycling sites are on side roads that may not have been fully cleared or gritted."
