AMONG the General Election buzz a new Wellington Town councillor was elected alongside Taunton Deane’s MP.

Mark Lithgow was selected as the new councillor for the Wellington North ward at the election on June 8.

Mr Lithgow, for the Liberal Democrats, beat out opponent Robin Dickinson, Conservative, with 1124 votes to 870.

The newly-elected councillor said: “My main concern is the wellbeing of the residents of Wellington, especially the more vulnerable ones such as the young or the elderly.

“I am hoping to help co-ordinate discussions between the groups of people that help them, such as the police or social services, to make the help more effective and to help keep the Wellington One Team sustainable.

“Another thing I feel is important is to work collaboratively with the other councillors, regardless of their political party, to get the best for the people of Wellington.”

Mr Lithgow has lived in Wellington since 1985, with three children that have grown up in the town and went to Beech Grove School and Court Fields.

As well as his interest in politics, Mr Lithgow is also a Samaritan and has been for many years, the president of St John Ambulance Wellington division where he helps to promote the volunteers and celebrates their achievements, and has an interest in motorcycles.

Mr Lithgow will be at his first official town council meeting on July 3.
