STUDENTS from a school in Wellington had thought-provoking visit from a holocaust survivor.
The Holocaust Education Trust visited Wellington School to work with the pupils in Year 9-13.
Alex Fender, Holocaust Educator, taught the students the history of the holocaust in the morning session, and urged the Year 9 pupils to think about the moral and ethical implications of the events.
In the afternoon, holocaust survivor Rudi Oppenheimer, gave a talk to the year groups. He told his story of life in Westerbork Transit Camp in Holland, as well as his experiences in Bergen-Belsen Concentration Camp, where he was incarcerated with the rest of his family.
John Caulfield, head of history at Wellington School, said: “A number of students stayed behind after the talk to chat to Rudi, and were in awe of Rudi's openness and equanimity when discussing such a traumatic part of his life.
"We are immensely grateful to him for coming to share his experiences with us.”
