WORK has began this week to link two important cycle routes in Taunton.

A continuous cycle route between Gipsy Lane and Corkscrew Lane is part of the Local Transport Plan from Somerset County Council, and will be of particular benefit to pupils at Ladymead Community School.

County Councillor Tony Shire, Portfolio Holder for Highways, said: "The council is committed to improving routes for walkers and cyclists and I'll look forward to seeing people enjoy this route improvement."

The cycle path runs northwards on the east side of the Taunton Vale Sports Club providing improved access to the sports club.

The cycle route will be segregated and installed adjacent to the existing footpath.

In addition to the cycle route the scheme includes the installation of a safe crossing point for cyclists who wish to cross Corkscrew Lane to gain access to the cycle path.

Mark Trusson, Headteacher of Ladymead Community School said: "Many of our pupils use this route to cycle to and from school.

"We are pleased that the planned improvements will benefit both these pupils and the wider community."

Construction work is likely to take about four weeks and no road closures are planned.
