SCOTLAND decides today (Thursday, September 18) whether to leave the United Kingdom in a historic referendum.

The result of the yes/no vote could have big repercussions in our area.

Taunton’s most famous Scot, Tommy Banner, of The Wurzels, who has lived in England for over 50 years, says he believes Scotland would face problems if it left.

“My family in Scotland are divided between yes and no,” said Tommy.

“I watched a few programmes on TV about it, but I honestly still can’t make up my mind.

“My own feeling is I’d rather Scotland stayed in the union as I believe they aren’t big enough to go it alone.

“I think they could go bankrupt in a few years.

“I think Scotland, England, Northern Ireland and Wales are all stronger united than on their own.”

Taunton Deane MP Jeremy Browne said: “I hope Scotland votes ‘No’ (to independence), but if that happens there should not be an unfair imbalance with Scotland getting a much better deal than England.

“Nor should Scottish MPs vote in Parliament for laws or budgets which only apply to England.”
