SCHOOLCHILDREN have answered the call for everyone to chip in to ensure Taunton gets its Christmas lights this year – now it’s up to others to follow their example.

Pupils at Trull Primary School donated £163.38 towards a £25,000 appeal to make sure the town centre is lit up over the festive period.

They paid for the privilege of wearing sparkly items for a day after hearing how Taunton could be without lights unless businesses and people chip in.

Now Kelly Durdan, who raised money for the lights from businesses and other donations over the past two years, says others have to do their bit to Make Taunton Sparkle.

Taunton Deane Council has promised to match whatever is raised up to a maximum of £10,000, leaving Ms Durdan to find £15,000.

She said: “We’re not even halfway there yet and we need the money by the start of November.”

A number of traders have agreed to donate, but Hugh Duder, of the County Stores, is appealing for more to be generous.

“We no longer have to pay a levy to the BID – (an initiative run by the now defunct Taunton Town Centre Company to fund promotional initiatives including the lights) – so businesses can afford to write a cheque,” said Mr Duder, who handed over his donation this week.

Mark Davenport is supporting the fundraising efforts with a ‘crowdfunding’ initiative – to make a pledge however large or small and find out how you could get a reward go to the Crowdfunder site here.

He said: “The message is – if you want Christmas lights, we’ve got a great opportunity to come together as businesses and residents as a community. We need to do something about it.”

Ms Durdan has appealed for local bands to perform for free at an event in the town later this month – a previous gig at the King’s Arms raised £360 towards the appeal.

Shoppers can give their loose change in buckets sited in Pan et Vin, County Stores, Miles Tea Rooms and Timpsons.
