BUSINESS leaders in Taunton are backing a new urban wildlife project aimed at revitalising the River Tone.

Eight firms based in Black-brook Business Park have met with Somerset Wildlife Trust to look at ways in which they can support the scheme which has already won Heritage Lottery Funding.

‘Routes to The River Tone’ is designed to engage local people with wildlife on their doorstep, improve the town’s green spaces and use nature to link neighbourhoods.

Gary Gabriel Associates, which has offices in Black-brook, is backing the project with a £500 donation and it is hoped other businesses in the area will also sign up.

Nick Tomlinson, project manager for the scheme, said interest from local businesses has been “very encouraging.”

“It was great to have six businesses come together and to see their enthusiasm for Routes to The River Tone,” said Nick.

“Having businesses such as GGA, who are so active in the Taunton landscape and so aw-are of the challenges we face, keen to get involved is brilliant, and I hope they are just the first of many.

“The project and its ambitions have already inspired so many and sparked real excitement within community groups and fuelled high enthusiasm for what we are hoping to achieve “It’s fantastic to take this wave of positivity forwards in our work.”

Duncan Clayton, GGA director said: “We are proud to support the valuable work of the Somerset Wildlife Trust.

“As a Taunton-based consultancy involved in developing the urban landscape, we fully support the principles of The Routes to the River Tone project, which encourages Taunton’s residents to explore the rich natural wealth their town possesses and to re-connect with nature.”

The scheme is also backed by Taunton Deane Council, the Environment Agency, Somerset County Council, Natural England and the Canal and Rivers Trust.
