WOMEN in Taunton are being urged to get the New Year off to a great start by singing up for Cancer Research’s Race for Life.

This year, the race will be taking place at Somerset College on July 19 with 5k and 10k events.

As well as raising funds for lifesaving research, taking part is an easy way to be more active, perfect for those setting themselves a fitness goal as their New Year’s resolution.

Maxine Bateman, Taunton event manager for Cancer Research UK, said: “We’re urging women of all ages, shapes and sizes to take on Race for Life in their region and sign up now.

“This is a non-competitive event, it’s not about being fit or fast.

“Most women are able to walk 5k in an hour while chatting and having fun or they can choose to jog, dance, or run if they’d prefer.”

Last year, 2,545 women took part in Race for Life in Taunton and raised £132,935.

This year, organisers want 2,600 women and girls to stride out and help raise £135,000.

Money raised allows Cancer Research UK’s doctors, nurses and scientists to advance research, helping save the lives of men, women and children across Somerset.

While cancer survival rates have doubled since the 1970s, more funds and supporters are needed to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.

Maxine added: “We’re calling on the brave ladies of Taunton to show their fighting spirit once more and take on cancer at this year’s event.

“Race for Life is to celebrate those who are with us, and also remember those who are not.

“The atmosphere is electric, our participants are so inspiring and we’re calling on the women of Taunton to help make 2015 our best year yet.”
