WORK is starting on transforming part of Taunton’s landmark Market House into a 21st Century visitor centre.

The existing Tourist Information Centre – currently based next to Taunton Library, in Paul Street – is relocating to the historic building this summer – and changing its name to Taunton Visitor Centre.

The facility will share the venue with a new restaurant, Wildwood, and the aim is to have the doors open, ready to welcome visitors by mid-July, in time for the Taunton Live festival.

The move will help attract even more people to the visitor centre, where they will be able to access a wide range of services including travel and tickets plus advice on where to go, where to stay and what to see.

Andrew Hopkins, Taunton Deane Council’s business development specialist (marketing and tourist information) said: “We are also working with the traders outside the new centre to create a ‘soft square’ which will encourage people to enjoy this beautiful building in the heart of our county town.”

The contractors for the project, SWH Build, are part of the Considerate Constructors Scheme that ensures its members respect both the community and the environment.

Build manager Richard Towl said: “SWH Build is delighted to have been appointed by Taunton Deane Council to carry out the refurbishment works to the Market House.

“We very much look forward to working within the busy trading community over the next few months, while delivering this exciting and prominent project.”

The Market House, built in 1772, is one of the county town’s most important historic buildings, commanding a strategic position in the town centre.
