THIS is how a derelict former cattle market could look after a £105million transformation promising to create over 1,800 jobs in Taunton.

The proposals for offices, a hotel, homes, waterfront cafes/bar-restaurants, a cinema, a supermarket and quality stores will be unveiled next week, when you have the chance to air your views.

A planning application will then be submitted for the project at Firepool, which has remained largely derelict since the livestock market closed over seven years ago.

St Modwen, development partner with site owner Taunton Deane Council, is hosting consultations next week, giving people the opportunity to comment on the proposals.

The company’s senior development manager Pete Davies said: “Firepool is a vital link in the chain of Taunton’s wider regeneration plans and one of the biggest mixed-use schemes in the region, with the potential to create in excess of 1,800 jobs.

“The upcoming public consultation marks an important stage in the redevelopment of the site and both St Modwen and the council would encourage as many people as possible to come along and express their views on the proposals and ask any questions they may have.”

Part of the Firepool site is already under development, with 45 apartments and four four-bedroom houses being built along the riverside.

Waste company Viridor has already established its HQ at Firepool, alongside Pip’s Park.

Deane leader Cllr John Williams said: “Taunton is one of the fastest growing towns in the region and has the advantage of excellent road and rail links, top quality schools and further education, first class medical facilities, great urban open spaces and superb countryside on its doorstep.

“But Taunton needs to be competitive and provide high quality facilities to attract continued inward investment and satisfy the needs of its growing population and the mix of uses proposed achieves just that.”

Deputy leader Cllr Mark Edwards, whose brief includes regeneration, said: “We have a proud history, but we are looking to a prouder future.

“We simply cannot afford to stand still. Our plans to regenerate Taunton town centre have been widely shared and we have already achieved a great deal.”
