WELSH hunk Gethin Jones and his Celebrity All Stars Football Team were in North Curry at the weekend to play an annual football match.

This year, the match was to raise money for leukaemia and lymphoma research after the passing of Tom Moore, who worked for the Premier League and died of leukaemia last year.

The game also raised money to fund the White Street Sport Ground where North Curry’s cricket and football teams play.

Gethin was joined by several stars including former cricketer Graeme Swann and former rugby player Martyn Williams.

Plenty of people turned out for the game which was followed by a Big Bash featuring a local band and a hog roast.

The afternoon on Sunday started with an exhibition from a selection of NCFC youth teams before the main game.

North Curry were quick out the blocks, racing in to a 2-0 lead lead thanks to two well taken goals from Neil Gage before the all stars had awoken.

This seemed to shock them in to action and they grew in to the game and got a goal back with a well placed effort from Oli Goodyear after a surging run from midfield.

Then Tom Hancock scored a screamer of a free kick, making it 2-2 at half-time.

The second half started slower, but Graeme Swann made it 3-2 for the stars with just 10 minutes of play to go before Neil Gage poked the ball home with just a couple of minutes left.

Penalties saw the home team secure the win.

A spokesperson for North Curry Football Club said:  “NCFC were delighted to welcome Gethin and his team of all-stars for the third running of this fixture.

“The club would like to thank Gethin and his all stars for coming down and taking time out of there schedules to help raise money for the club and more importantly leukaemia and lymphoma research.”
