BOSSES in the Taunton area are being warned to pay at least the new minimum wage which comes into effect today (Thursday, October 1) – or face a fine of up to £20,000 per worker.
A survey by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills showed that 80% of businesses in the area are unaware of how high the penalty is for underpaying employees, including apprentices.
The new minimum wage rates from today are £6.70 an hour for anyone 21 and over, up from £6.50; £5.30 for 18 to 20-year-olds, a rise from £5.13; £3.87 for under 18s, compared to the previous £3.79; and £3.30 for apprentices, up from £2.73.
Someone working 35 hours a week will see their annual pay packet boosted by £364, while apprentices will receive an extra £1,037.
