WORK to replace and upgrade a pedestrian crossing in north Taunton is due to start next month (March).

As part of Somerset County Council’s ongoing maintenance programme, the crossing near the petrol station on Greenway Road will also be moved by 50m to improve visibility and safety.

The new crossing will use extra low voltage equipment, LED signal heads and pedestrian sensors, which will save money, reduce energy usage and provide a safer and more efficient site for both pedestrians and motorists.

Work will begin on Monday, March 7, and take around five weeks with temporary traffic lights in place.

There will also be an evening road closure in late March for resurfacing.

Cllr David Fothergill, Somerset County Council’s cabinet member for highways, said: “This crossing is vital for local residents and school children and I’m pleased we’re able to make some safety improvements while carrying out essential maintenance.

“Please be aware of some disruption while work takes place although we will of course do our best to keep this to a minimum.”
