A MOTORIST was caught speeding on the same stretch of road FIVE times in less than a fortnight.

Maryanne Weatherley, 51, of Woodhill, Stoke St Gregory, has been banned from driving and fined after the latest two incidents.

Each time she was clocked by a speed cameras going over the 30mph limit on the A358 at Henlade, where thousands of drivers have been fined in recent years.

Last week, Weatherley pleaded guilty at Taunton Magistrates' Courts to two counts of speeding and was fined a total of £250, with £170 costs and a £20 victim surcharge. She was banned from driving for seven days on each count.

Magistrates said they were banning her from driving because she had been caught speeding on the same stretch of road five times in less than 14 days.

Both offences were committed near the junction of Lipe Lane and Stoke Road.

Doug Lowe, chairman of Ruishton and Thornfalcom Parish Council, who lives nearby, said: "Wherever people drive, they should drive with due care and attention.

"Speeding in that area is of concern to the parish council and has been brought up at our meetings.

"It's one of the worst roads in Somerset for speeding and we are constantly asking for extra signage to warn people."

He added that the county council monitors traffic speeds at three sites in the parish and has clocked vehicles regularly travelling at between 60 and 70 mph.

Jane Hofmeister set up the charity Think Amy to educate people to keep within the speed limit after her teenage daughter was knocked down and killed by a motorist racing his girlfriend's car.

She said: "The speed limit and the cameras are there for a reason because the junctions on the stretch of road are dangerous.

"I would plead with people to abide by the speed limit - 30mph might not sound very fast, but you can do an awful lot of damage even at that speed."
