The road was also closed with at the junction with Bridge Street.
A total of four fire engines, three from Taunton and one from Wellington plus the aerial ladder platform from Bridgwater, were sent to the fire.
At one point, the fire broke into an adjacent property and a building surveyor was requested for assessment of the building.

The gas board and Western Power were also requested.
Fire crews used six breathing apparatus, three hose reel jets, one safety jet, a short extension ladder, small tools and a thermal image camera to deal with the incident.
All fire appliances have now left the scene but there will be a re-inspection by Taunton fire crew early this evening.
