IF you're getting married and fancy something different from the traditional fruit or sponge cake with icing, how about...a pork pie?

Farmer cum butcher Graeme Wallace can now add baker to his job description as he has started supplying three-tier, home-made pork pie wedding cakes.

Mr Wallace, from Hemyock, has so far taken orders for 19 of his unusual wedding cakes, with the latest enjoyed by the newly weds and their guests in Norfolk.

He said: "People are looking for something a little different. They can easily get bored with a traditional fruit cake or sponge covered in icing.

"A pork pie cake is more adventurous. I make three types - plain, with chicken breast and apricot or with venison and cranberries.

"It all started when I fancied doing a bit of cooking and decided to make a big pork pie.

"I showed it at a food fair and someone said, 'Why don't you stack them up in tiers and make a wedding cake?' and it's taken off from there.

"We've been on the farm for 30-odd years, raising animals and doing butchery and it's good to be doing something a little different when that part of the day is over."

Mr Wallace has branched out into mail order for his pies, which sell at £150 for three tiers and include a five and a half kilo 'giant' base and can serve up to 180 people - a fourth tier would have a 'super giant' base weighing 8.5kilos.

He even adds decorations on demand such as herbs and flowers.

"It's early days, but I'm gradually doing more and more and I've had very good comments back from married couples who've ordered pork pies for their reception," added Mr Wallace.

"I attend food fairs all over the place and I always get inquiries about the pork pies. The word is gradually spreading."
