THERESA May has declared her support for plans to dual A303 at Prime Minister's Questions.

The Prime Minister made the comments in support of South Somerset MP Marcus Fysh, who is also a county councillor.

The message has been echoed by council leader John Osman, who said the project needs to happen as an important step to boost the local economy.

MP Fysh called for further investment in projects that will deliver economic benefits, in particular about the need for dualling of the A303.

Mrs May welcomed Somerset’s profile on the issue and supported moves to invest in infrastructure to help businesses and communities.

Cllr Osman said: “It is great that projects like the A303 have been discussed in the House of Commons.”

“I and my Cabinet colleagues have regular meetings with the various Secretaries of State, and also with all our MPs to try to increase investments and investment opportunities in our county.

"I congratulate Marcus for raising this question with the Prime Minister and also her suggestion that further discussions are held with the Communities Secretary.

"Increasing the opportunities for jobs, economic growth and reducing journey times is a vital part of what we all want for Somerset.”

Marcus Fysh said: "It’s important to look at what additional advantages infrastructure projects can bring and I am sure that one of those will be to support our skills base here.

"I have been working across a number of Government Departments to maximise the package that this Government can bring to the South West and get as much work as we can into the area.

"This is a once in a generation opportunity to look at a number of challenges we face, such as how to supply housing and give a genuine long term boost to industries such as aerospace."
