FORMER Taunton-based Royal Marine and polar explorer Alan Chambers set off on Sunday on the 11-day headeast cycle challenge from Siagon, in Vietnam, to Angkor Watt, Cambodia.

He is part of a team of 12 led by ex England rugby captain Lewis Moody riding up to 130km a day across steep and unforgiving terrain in temperatures of up to 35degs C in aid of the Lewis Moody Foundation.

The adventurers aim to raise £75,000 for the HeadSmart campaign to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of brain tumours in young people and children.

The two men, who expect to be home on Friday week, first partnered along with Y.CO superyacht brand in challenge to the North Pole last year, raising £200,000 for charity.
