A DESIGN student from Richard Huish College has been selected as the winner in a competition to create a new logo for a sports company.

Leala Jacobs was chosen by North Curry Sports Limited (NCSL) after she designed the company some new branding materials.

Twenty-three design students from the college took part in the competition, but 17-year-old Leala, who recently won the Somerset Day logo competition, came out on top.

Judging the competition was Anne Pike and Laurence Leader from NCSL, Matthew Williams, graphic design teacher, and Josh Beadon, creative director at Toucan, a design and branding agency in Exeter.

Laurence Leader, NCSL chairman, said: “We approached Huish to assist with creating a new identity for our sports club through long-standing connections with the College.

“Leala clearly did her research, taking inspiration from North Curry’s most iconic animal, the heron, which fits perfectly with the club. Our whole club is run by volunteers, and we thank Leala for contributing her time, voluntarily, to create the logo and brand which we are looking forward to implementing.”

The design will be used for print and digital publicity material by the club, which runs White Street Sports Ground in North Curry.

Matthew Williams, graphic design teacher, said “Huish particularly welcomes live projects and we were delighted to be approached by North Curry Sports Ltd to help develop an identity for their club.

“This has been a great way for our students to work with potential employers - it gives them valuable commercial understanding, enriches their learning experience, will look great on their CVs and could potentially kick start careers in the creative field.”
