SWIMMERS are less likely to complain about chlorine stinging their eyes thanks to new disinfectant measures in Taunton's public baths.

Ultraviolet systems have been installed in the plant rooms at the council-owned pools at Blackbrook Leisure Centre and off Station Road, meaning much less chlorine is needed to kill off any bugs lurking in the water.

It's good news for people taking a dip at Blackbrook, where the £5.7 million pool closed twice within three months of opening last August - once for water supply problems and another time due to vomiting and diarrhoea bacteria in the water.

Pools operator Greenwich Leisure Ltd has been working with Cllr Catherine Herbert, leisure portfolio holder for Taunton Deane Borough Council, to invest in the healthier cleaning method.

A company spokesman said benefits of UV treatment over traditional methods include improved air and water quality and reduced asthma and respiratory illness caused by chlorine for frequent pool users.

James Curry, GLL head of service in the South West and Wales, said: "GLL are really pleased that TDBC has invested in UV at these two facilities. We are confident our customers will enjoy the much-improved swim experience.”

Cllr Herbert said: "I am really pleased that we have been able to enhance the swimming experience for our community by the addition of the UV disinfection providing improved air quality for swimmers."
