TIME is running out for you to have your say on what could be the biggest shake up in local politics in our neck of the woods.

People in Taunton Deane and West Somerset have until next Tuesday to give their views on the proposal to create a new single district council covering both areas.

Both councils have voted in favour of the merger and a public consultation opened on December 12 has given residents, businesses and organisations the chance to get involved in the debate - check out the website by clicking here.

There has also a series of eight public roadshows across the two areas to give people an opportunity to understand more about how the proposal would affect them and their communities.

In addition, ten meetings with town and parish councils took place in order to gather opinions.

Cllr John Williams, leader of Taunton Deane Borough Council, said: “The roadshows provided a way of finding out the facts face-to-face, while the website has a wealth of information plus a feedback form.

"It’s simple and straightforward to use.”

The decision on whether a new council is created rests with the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Sajid Javid, and the consultation exercise will help inform his decision.

West Somerset Council leader Cllr Anthony Trollope-Bellew said: “It’s really important that we seek your views before we submit our proposal for a new, single district council to Government. Please get involved, give us your opinions.”

It’s not too late to take part - get full details of the proposal and to give your views via an online questionnaire here.

Paper questionnaires are available at the councils’ offices for those who prefer to submit a handwritten response.
