COMMUTERS face disruption on a main artery road into Taunton to allow remedial work to be carried out on a new road that only opened last week.

Work is being carried out on the Kingston Loop Bridge over Station Road from tomorrow (Wednesday, July 19) over three days.

The bridge forms part of the £22 million Northern Inner Distributor Road from Staplegrove Road's junction with Chip Lane to Priory Avenue.

The road opened last Tuesday 27 months late and Somerset County Council is involved in a legal dispute with contractors Carillion.

A County Hall spokesman said: “Due to planned remedial works on the underside of Station Bridge by contractor Carillion, there will be lane closures and a three-way temporary traffic light system on Station Road and Station Approach in Taunton for three days from Wednesday, July 19, during off peak hours (9.30am to 3.30pm).

"As mentioned when the NIDR opened last week, as in any major road scheme, there are still some minor finishing works for Carillion to complete – this being one example.

“The work is to remove some brick mortar splashed on the underside of the bridge on Station Road by the contractors during construction.

"These works are cosmetic at this stage but it needs to be cleaned off to prevent it causing any issues in the long term.”
