A DETERMINED boy who has defied medical opinion is planning a six-mile hike for charity this weekend.

Wilf Stirzaker, aged ten, who has cerebral palsy, is walking over the Quantock Hills in aid of Children in Need.

Wilf says "a couple of miles to you is like a marathon to me" but is still confident of completing the challenge from Lydeard Hill to Staple Plain on Saturday.

It's a big enough effort for any ten-year-old, but Wilf's parents were warned to expect the worst after he was born ten weeks premature.

When he survived, doctors said the Bishops Lydeard youngster would probably never sit or walk by himself - both of which he now does.

His mother, Katy, said: "When he started at the village school, he went there by wheelchair and used a walking frame, but now he manages without either.

"Last year he went on the school residential trip when he went caving and climbing.

"He's a bit of a miracle. He's very determined and doesn't let things stop him - he used to have a T shirt saying, 'Not even CP can stop me'.

"He just pushes on and lumps in with everybody else. He won't complain."

Somerset County Gazette:

Wilf decided to do his own walk after seeing a report on a Children in Need ramble on BBC1's Countryfile, telling his family: "I could do one of those, couldn't I?"

Mrs Stirzaker said: "I said, 'Yes you could'. He wants to do it because he's had lots of help over the years.

"We've been on a practice walk, but this will be the first time he's ever walked that far in one go. He's really looking forward to it."

Wilf will be accompanied by his parents and brothers Henry, 16, and Toby, 13, and people from his school and hopes to raise hundreds of pounds.

On his fundraising website, Wilf says: "I was born a lot earlier than I should have been; because of this I have cerebral palsy.

"This means that I find it difficult to walk and run. A couple of miles to you is like a marathon to me.

"I’d like to raise some money because there have been so many people who have helped me throughout my life and I would like to give something back."
