TAUNTON residents will have a chance to view plans for two new school developments in the works.

Inital plans for the two new schools in Taunton will be on show for public comment next month.

Families and local residents can comment on proposals for a new 420-place primary school at Nerrols (known locally as Northwalls Grange) and an expansion of Selworthy secondary school at the former St Augustine site – which would be known as the Hazelbrook Campus.

A drop-in event will be held at Selworthy School, Selworthy Road, between 6pm and 8pm on Tuesday, December 12.

Artists’ impressions of the exterior and interior of the new buildings will be on show, with visitors able to discuss the plans and feedback on their likes and dislikes.

The planning applications for the schools are expected to be submitted in the New Year.

Cllr Frances Nicholson, Cabinet Member for Children and Families at Somerset County Council, said: “These are exciting plans for new school developments and we’d like to hear from anyone who has an interest, particularly the local community and prospective parents.

“The need for school places is always growing and we are committed to planning ahead to make sure we have the spaces in the right places.

“The Nerrols site is the perfect location to meeting the needs of the Northwalls Grange development, and the St Augustine site is ideal for the expansion of Selworthy on to two sites."

Representatives from the council will be on hand to talk through the initial design and listen to people views and comments.

The new primary school at Nerrols with include a nursery for children aged between two and 11.

The county council will be looking for an academy sponsor in January 2018, with the final decision to be made by the Secretary of State.

Development of the Hazelbrook Campus will create between 80 and 100 much-needed new spaces for Selworthy School. The intention is to split the school over two sites, with the Hazelbrook Campus being home to secondary age children and the current Selworthy site the primary aged children.
