STREET cleaners have denied removing personal items left by homeless people outside premises in the centre of Taunton.

Workers from Idverde, Taunton Deane Borough Council's contractors, were called to North Street to clear away broken glass this morning (Thursday).

The council's streetwise co-ordinator, Ian Laity, was at the scene, outside Lloyds Bank, for "several hours".

Nobody appeared on the scene to claim any of the items of what was classed as "rubbish" blocking an emergency exit. No bedding or clothes were removed.

A Deane spokeswoman said: "The council received reports this morning of broken glass in North Street which was cleared away by our contractors Idverde in line with our policy of responding to reports of litter and broken glass.

"The streetwise co-ordinator was on site for several hours but nobody came forward to claim that the items in question belonged to them.

"We can confirm that no items of bedding or clothing were removed, only discarded items of rubbish and glass that were blocking an emergency exit.”
