BUILDING firm Rok has laid off “around half a dozen” staff in Taunton as the recession looms.

The Taunton office of the company, which brands itself “the nation’s local builder” and has 60 centres in England and Scotland, has escaped lightly compared to other areas of the country, with a total of around 1,000 facing redundancy.

A spokeswoman said: “The job losses announced by Rok nationally have not had a significant impact on our Taunton office because that business operates in the maintenance and small building sector, which is a growth area for us.

“Where we are noticing a fall in sales is contracting and the larger projects, which has meant we have had to make around half a dozen roles redundant as the recession affects people’s decisions to start new schemes.”

The taunton office has been a mess for about the last two odd years. I left there february 07 after 4 staff left on the lead christmas including the area leader who had no building experience what so ever. I feel sorry for the remaing staff as they have worked hard to keep the office on the map. On plus side Garvis will be keen to keep it going as Taunton is his old stomping ground.
