STAFF at Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, joined an emergency exercise to test responses in the event of a nuclear incident.

They worked with other emergency services and the local authorities to rehearse procedures for a radioactive leak at Hinkley Point B Power Station.

A decontamination tent was set up, staff wore emergency protective clothing and went through the procedures for decontaminating and treating ‘dummy’ patients.

Jon Tipping, associate specialist in accident and emergency, said: “This was a really useful day, enabling us to check that our major incident planning is up-to-scratch.

“We were able to test our communication systems and the vital procedures for partnership working with other agencies.

“Of course we hope we’ll never have to use these procedures in a real emergency incident, but it’s very important to know we have the necessary systems in place.”
