Worker receives compensation after Bradon Farm explosion

A FARM worker injured in an explosion at a fruit and vegetable farm near Taunton in 2010 has received compensation for the ordeal which nearly cost him his life.

Arek Kuchczynski, 31, was one of five workers carrying out maintenance to a tank of compressed air and hot water when it exploded, killing one and injuring four others.

The incident happened at Cantelo Nurseries at Bradon Farm near Isle Abbotts on May 11.

Mr Kuchczynski suffered head injuries, first degree burns and required extensive skin grafts.

Speaking after his recovery, he said: “I am just so pleased to still be here.

“The accident was awful and I want to put it all behind me now.”

Mr Kuchczynski still works and lives at the farm, where he has been for four years, and added that he has a good relationship with it.

A spokesman from Cantelo Nurseries said: “We are very pleased that Mr Kuchczynski made such a good recovery and has returned to work.”

Jonathan Rich, of Pardoes legal firm, who advised Mr Kuchczynski, said: “I am delighted that the case came to an acceptable and speedy result, with Arek receiving appropriate recompense for the serious injuries he sustained.”

At the time of the incident, Thomas Jones, managing director of Cantelo Nurseries, said: “Our thoughts and sympathies are with the families and all those involved in this tragic accident.”

Crewkerne man Peter Sidney James, 67, died in hospital after the incident.
