50-year anniversary of Langport East train station closing

MONDAY marked the 50-year anniversary since Langport East train station closed.

The station opened more than 100 years ago on July 2, 1906, to give the town two stations, the other being called Langport West.

But Langport East closed on September 10, 1962, as part of The Beeching Cuts which saw nationwide cutbacks and restructuring of railways.

The station, which had one platform, was one of the stops on the Castle Cary to Taunton line and Harry Carpenter, who lives along the side of the line, said the track was still being used when he moved into his house more than 50 years ago.

Mr Carpenter said: “The line is still used and can be quite busy at weekends but there is nothing left of the platforms now.

“The storage hut used to keep all the workers’ equipment is still intact.”
