Free parking for Taunton shoppers

Graham Love Graham Love

SHOPPERS are being tempted into town by free parking introduced to give them more spending power.

Organisers believe the 'Free after 3pm' initiative on Saturdays attracted extra people to Taunton town centre last weekend - and hope for even more this Saturday (September 22) and next.

The scrapping of charges in High Street, the orchard centre, The Crescent, Canon Street and Coal Orchard car parks from 3pm to 6pm on Saturdays until the end of the month is being run by Taunton Deane Council and Taunton Business Improvement (BID).

Taunton Town Centre manager Graham Love said: “It's really positive for the business community and car parks were very busy on Saturday afternoon.

“It was great to see the town filling up and it all helps to boost the pounds in people's pockets and boost retail businesses in town.”

Next TDBC will say they cant afford to run these carparks anymore and they will close them and turn into somewhere travellers will pitch their caravans. This will know doubt cost millions to do and then there will be no money left for elderly care and other vital services.

TDBC mismanaging your public finances everyday!

Another clearly analogous case of re-arranging the deck-chairs on the sinking Titanic....

And yet another press release, churned out as a 'news story' and approved by the Gazette editor...

'Churnalism' at its best...

Brilliant !!! Somerset County Council pay £ 1.8 million a year to Webberbus to operate the Park and Ride service, and TDBC then offer free car parking in the town centre. What have we done to deserve these morons running our town and county !!!!

The park and ride is not suitable for all, a family of four or more with a child in a pram wishing to do a fair old shop would not entertain using the park and ride & i for one don't blame them.

I agree.....but that doesn't excuse the ludicrous situation of SCC paying £ millions to a private company to operate a "white elephant" Park & Ride that is seriously underused and overpriced, whilst TDBC operate the car parks in Town and have a totally different agenda.
It's OUR MONEY these fools are using to do this !!!
