Pedestrian crossing plan for busy Wellington road

Cllr Andy Govier. Cllr Andy Govier.

A PEDESTRIAN crossing could be placed along a busy stretch of road.

Town councillor Andy Govier has applied to the county council’s capital budget for a share of a £2.4m road safety cash pot to fund a crossing between the church and St John’s School on Taunton Road.

Councillors were encouraged to submit Small Improvement Schemes focused on improving local highways and road safety.

Cllr Govier said: “You get a lot of children crossing between the church and the school, and some of the elderly people in the flats contacted the council asking for something to be done. I think some of them put together a petition, too.

“Sometimes they have crossing patrols outside the school and when that’s there it’s great, when it’s not there needs to be something else.

“I’m waiting to hear back and from what I gather there shouldn’t be too many problems, so hopefully we’ll have something in the New Year.”

The council’s highway engineers will now assess each scheme against design and budgetary restrictions.

I see the need for a crossing but does Wellington really need another set of traffic signals for goodness sake?? Wellington has been totally crippled by the inefficient lights at the Longforth Road junction that many people now avoid totally and go up through North Street, which is quicker!!

Agreed Dr Dave, lets hope the new road hopes relieve the congestion. Its ridiculous what has happened. It takes longer to get out of Wellington than it does to drive to Taunton sometimes!

Please don't let somerset Highways get involved they will build a park and rude with a thousand lights and increase congestion. Build a bridge at silk mills they said, won't have to wait for trains they said. Now just have to wait for the traffic lights even at 1am when the roads are empty.

Can't they consult someone who knows what their doing?

It really is so sad that hardly anyone knows how to use English grammar and spelling on these comment pages.

Linzibee

Don't be so sad

Whilst spelling and grammar are important in formal writing, this is a place for comments and it is more important that all can comment irrespective of their writing skills.
