SOMERSET County Council says it will consider requests to impose 20mph speed limits on residential and urban roads after the idea was discussed at a Wellington Town Council meeting.

Ben Fox, of Wellington-based company The Big House Co and representative of the 20's Plenty For Us campaign, approached the town council about his proposals for reducing speed limits in the town, which were highlighted at a meeting on Monday.

Mr Fox said: “I believe there is cross party support for 20mph throughout the UK's residential streets so I am very confident it will go ahead - it's just a matter of when.”

20's Plenty for Us, a 'not for profit' organisation, has about 200 local campaigns around the UK.

Wellington Deputy Mayor Janet Lloyd said: “We discussed the idea at this month's meeting and we will be looking to find another town, roughly the same size of Wellington, to see how they have adopted the 20mph limit.

“We will plan to approach Somerset County Council to see what cost implications there will be to fund this campaign.
“The 20mph speed restrictions are already in place near Wellesley Park School and we're looking to introduce this throughout Wellington.”

A spokesman for Somerset County Council said: “We will consider requests for 20mph speed limits alongside other options for improving the safety of pedestrians and cyclists.

“There are a number of criteria which must be met and schemes may also have to compete for access to funding as part of the Small Improvement Schemes programme.

“Further information on applying for new speed limits can be found on our website, www.somerset.gov.uk.”
