KINGSMEAD School in Wiveliscombe commemorated the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War with a whole day devoted to studying life at that time.

Workshops were held on the poetry of Wilfred Owen, trench art, the use of propaganda and Thankful Villages of Somerset.

Students also learned about the advances in science at the time of the war, including aviation, sonar and chemical weapons.

Fun was had playing games of the period, including hopscotch, marbles and skipping.

The day was organised in partnership with Somerset Remembers, the centenary project managed by the SouthWest Heritage Trust.

Students were shown artefacts from the war and found out what life was like for children at that time.

The day culminated in a rugby match between Year 10 and 11 students, inspired by the Christmas Truce of 1914 and recognising the power of sport to bring people together.

The match was held at Wiveliscombe Recreation Ground to commemorate the presentation of the ground by the Hancock family to the people of Wiveliscombe in honour of those lost in the war.
