A CAMPAIGN group protesting against plans for a massive housing development in Wellington has issued a last-minute rallying call for support.

Today (Thursday, January 8) is the final deadline for people to comment to Taunton Deane Council on an outline planning application for the building of 650 homes on the Jurston Farm site.

And tonight there is also a special town council meeting specifically to discuss the plans for a huge area on the south side of the town.

Save Wellington members have mounted a vigorous campaign against the application by developers C.G. Fry & Son.

A campaign spokesman said this week: “This is the last chance for people to object to the plans at this stage and we hope everyone will demonstrate the opposition we’ve witnessed since they were revealed.

“This is a pivotal stage in the application process, but whatever happens with the outline application we’ll continue to oppose the development at every stage in the future.

“This is very much a marathon rather than a sprint.”

The spokesman said there were three ways to object – all by quoting Planning Application 43/14/0130.

Save Wellington members were in the town centre on Saturday, handing out protest leaflets.

They are also calling on opponents to the development to attend the town council meeting tonight (Thursday) at the United Reform Church hall in Fore Street at 6.15pm.

At the start of December, banner- waving protesters brought town centre traffic to a standstill as they marched along the A38.

The previous month, Save Wellington’s day of action saw more than 300 people sign up in support of the campaign in just three hours.

In October, more than 100 people packed into Wellesley Park Primary School for a protest meeting staged by the group.

The spokesman said: “We will keep fighting – our campaign will continue to the bitter end.”
