A WIVELISCOMBE man has joined three friends on a journey of a lifetime to raise money to help cure polio and ebola.

Sean Berry, 50, set off on the Dakar challenge – a road trip from Wiveliscombe to Bamako in Mali – in a Toyota Starlet on January 19 in a group called the ‘50s Starlets’.

They are following the Timbuktu challenge but will finish in Bamako for safety reasons.

The group has already travelled through France and Spain and will soon travel through the Western Sahara, Senegal and Mali.

Parts of the journey require a military escort due to the risks involved.

Sean’s wife, Liz, said: “They have just crossed the border into Mauritania, which is two days ahead of schedule.

“They will be camping in the desert for the first time as well, which will be an experience for them.

“We gave them a big send-off from Wiveliscombe Square, with family, friends and members of Wiveliscombe Rotary all waving them off.

“Sean has always wanted to do something like this and turning 50 last September gave him the motivation to do it.”
