PUPILS, staff, parents and friends of Wellington School staged a variety of fundraising events this week to provide emergency equipment for those affected by the earthquake in Nepal.

Pupils and staff enjoyed wearing their home clothes in a non-uniform day on Tuesday for a minimum donation of £2.

At break-time, the Catering Department provided luxury cupcakes and delicious milkshakes with all proceeds going directly to Shelterbox, the charity that provides emergency shelter and vital supplies to support communities.

Shelterbox equipment has already started arriving in Nepal.

During lunchtime, school staff provided an eclectic mix of musical entertainment at a special Music4Lunch concert. Performers wowed the audience a recital on the classical guitar, John Lennon’s Imagine, Kurt Weil’s Mac the Knife as well as fun instrumentals such as the Pink Panther on the tenor saxophone and an amazing display of the Irish bagpipes.

The event culminated in a rendition of Lou Reed’s Perfect Day by a 20-strong staff choir.

The fundraising extravaganza was the idea of two Year 11 students, Flynn Simpson and Tom Hollingsworth, who approached the Wellington School Charities Committee to put the plan into action.

Sixth Formers Antony James and Flora Johnson, who lead the Charities Committee directed the day setting up a Justgiving site and ensuring all monies were collected and counted.

The aim of the day was to raise £1800 to buy three Shelterboxes but this target was smashed with a total collection of over £4,000 on the day.

An incredible effort for an urgent cause, which the pupils hope will bring relief to many families in Nepal.
