A Somerset teacher has been named as the parachutist who died at Dunkeswell Aerodrome in Honiton. Chris Jones, 61, was the head of chemistry at Wellington School.

An investigation has been launched after his death on Friday at Dunkeswell Aerodrome in Honiton, however his death is not being treated as suspicious.

Headmaster of Wellington School Henry Price has paid tribute to a "fine schoolmaster and a well-respected colleague".

He said; "Wellington School is deeply saddened by the sudden death of Mr Chris Jones in a parachute accident on Friday. As head of chemistry, assistant housemaster in Willows and in numerous other roles, Mr Jones made a significant and positive impact on the lives of countless Wellingtonians and he will be greatly missed by the whole community.

"Our thoughts are with his wife, Liz, their three children and all of his wider family and friends."

There is a book of condolences available at School for any member of the school community to sign.

Mr Jones had worked at Wellington for 13 years.

Mr Jones was from the Pontyclun area of south Wales.

The British Parachute Association (BPA) has opened an investigation into the incident.

A spokesperson for Dunkeswell Aerodrome said: "The British Parachute Association board of inquiry will investigate the accident and, when completed, will submit reports to the coroner, the police, the Civil Aviation Authority, the BPA and any other relevant authorities."
