WIVELISCOMBE'S ever popular 10 Parishes Festival got off to a flying start at the weekend.

The re-opening of Wiveliscombe Town Hall was the centrepiece of the festival on its first weekend.

The facility has been closed since 1958 and a comic performance-art production by Wellington company Forkbeard Fantasy gave a novel introduction for many seeing inside for the first time.

"Behind Closed Doors" was a mixture of low light acting and video footage telling the story of an uncooperative ghost based in the abandoned room.

Crowds also flocked to the celebrated street market and carnival on Sunday which offered plenty of crafts and local foods.

The theme for the carnival procession was Roald Dahl characters, attracting a record number of entries.

There was much interest in the open artist studios and exhibitions that comprise the core of the festival across the ten parishes.

The festival continues this weekend with more performances, events and walks.

A highlight will be the Raddington Festival of Music that will raise funds for repairs to the ancient church.
