AN INDEPENDENT retailer in Wellington is hoping to help attract shoppers to the town this Christmas with extra opening hours.

Sally Hooper of Mad Dog initiated the idea which is being supported by Taunton Deane Council.

The council has produced flyers for “Wellington Wednesdays” which are also being supported by the Wellington Business Association.

Almost 20 shops will be taking part, opening until 7pm every Wednesday in December to give customers more time to buy presents and essentials. Some will also be offering in-store promotions to attract extra footfall.

Participating traders will also be opening on Sundays in the run-up to Christmas, and the authority is offering free parking in its Wellington car parks all day on Saturdays.

Cllr Mark Edwards executive cllr for business development, said: “Wellington has a good reputation for its independent shops which offer a complete range of products from essentials to specialist items.

“Traders are well supported throughout the year and I hope they will enjoy increased business as a result of these seasonal initiatives.”
