HUNDREDS of fitness fanatics pounded the streets of Wellington as they embarked on another gruelling Taunton Deane Triathlon.

Hardy folk tackled the challenging course on Sunday, which involved a 200m swim, a demanding 12.5k bike ride and an energy-sapping 2.5k run, in the hope of raising much needed cash for charities across the region.

The event, organised by Somerset RC Tri Club and Tone Leisure and sponsored by Foot Anstey, is in its 15th year but proving more popular than ever with both competitors and spectators.

The athletes, many of whom take part each year, enjoyed dry weather and sunshine - near perfect conditions – resulting in records being broken.

William Collins broke the one-hour mark for the first time ever as he clocked a winning time of 59 minutes 47 seconds.

Competitors used Wellington Sports Centre pool for the swim element and the quiet roads towards Milverton and Wiveliscombe were used for the cycle ride and run.

And Andrew Hannam, of Foot Anstey, thanked the organisers for another successful race.

He added: “With lots of activities taking place throughout the day to keep the whole family entertained and so many records being broken, it was a memorable day for the whole community.”
