Dismay over state of Rockwell Green cemetery

ROCKWELL Green cemetery has left a town councillor “dismayed” after seeing the overgrown grass and shrubbery blighting its image.

Jackie Govier expressed her concern at this week’s town council meeting, saying that she and others have been left appalled by the lack of respect shown.

She added: “I’ve had a lot of complaints about a lack of care. I was there two weeks ago and it’s overgrown – I was dismayed by the state of it.

“There are many areas where it’s overgrown and not properly kept at all, so they assured us they would go and have a look. I’ve been promised it will be sorted, but in the meantime I’ve had people complaining about the lack of respect.”

Fellow councillors and residents also expressed thoughts about the general state of grass verges around the town, but Taunton Deane Council, responsible for these and the cemetery, said the weather hasn’t helped.

A spokesman said: “The council takes pride in maintaining its cemeteries. This year, however, due to the exceptionally wet weather we have experienced we have not been able to cut the grass as frequently.

“Cutting the grass when it is so wet damages the turf. The cuttings would also adhere to the memorials.

“As soon as there is a dry spell the work will be done to its usual high standard.”
