A FORMER leukaemia sufferer from Wellington set sail on a race around the Isle of Wight to help the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.

Rob Sharland, now 23, was diagnosed aged five and first took to the waves in 2007. Last weekend, he returned as a volunteer to help 25 youngsters in the Round the Island event.

He said: "Because I can no longer come back as a youngster I decided it would be good to do it as a volunteer aboard the boats, helping out others who are in the same position I once was.”
