THE revival of a tradition celebrating part of Watchet’s history has been well received in the town.

Queen Caturn’s Night was held to mark the visit to Watchet by King Charles II’s wife, Queen Catherine, in the 17th century.

A Christmas market, Santa, stalls with mulled cider, cakes and music helped bring history to life in The Esplanade.

Organiser Sara Summers said: “Considering it was the first time it had been marked in this way for a while, I think it went exceedingly well.

“We had a parade, which went really well and everyone in the town seemed quite upbeat about it all.

“Sylvana Chandler, the High Sheriff of Somerset, said she thought it was a fantastic event and she has been very supportive throughout.

“We were really lucky with the weather – it was the first day in about two weeks that we didn’t have any rain.

“We will definitely hold it next year – maybe at the weekend instead – and we are quite optimistic about making it an annual event.”
