IT MIGHT be two years since the London 2012 Olympics, but the legacy of the Games lives on this summer.
Community Games, an England-wide project, is back for 2014 with plenty of sports and cultural activities planned across Somerset over the coming months.
The programme will also be honouring a stand-out volunteer whose hard work has been keeping the London 2012 Olympic spirit alive in our local community.
Gillian Payne, from Brompton Regis, has been named as the Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership’s Shining Light.
She was handed over a speciallycommissioned Somerset willow baton, made by Wicked Willow worker Jules Doncaster from Dulverton.
Gillian was passed the title from last year’s Shining Light, Jonathan Smith from Burnham-on-Sea.
Gillian said: “I became involved in Community Games three years ago, they are wonderful events.
“Living as I do in this remote area of Exmoor, it is important to get people of the community, young and old, to come together for such activities.
“I feel very honoured to be Somerset’s Shining Light for Community Games.”
Gillian will be organising another event at Wimbleball Lake on Bank Holiday Monday, August 25.
