AN “EXTREMELY rare” mechanical failure of Watchet Marina’s tidal gate, could cost tens of thousands to repair.

The gate has been broke since last Thursday and staff at the marina are working hard with designers to sort the problem out.

They have assured people that they are open for business to allow access for boats, but that a call must be made to the marina first so arrangements can be sorted.

A spokesperson said it appeared that a hinge had sheared off the gate, which is supposed to last 50 years.

The gate was installed back in 2001 and had a hydraulic ramp installed in 2003.

The spokesperson added: “We are all working very hard, we’re having to hand manoeuvre the gates but it does mean we’re all beginning to look like young gods.

“Investigations are underway and there are designers coming next week to see what we can do to sort out the problem.”

James Burnell, manager at Watchet Marina said: “This is an unprecedented, non-textbook and extremely rare thing to happen.

“We are doing everything we can to sort this but sadly I don’t have a timescale of how long it will take to repair.

“The gate weights seven tonne, and it would take a 32 meter crane to lift it out, we don’t know if it does need to be taken out yet but it is looking likely.

“We’re talking to a lot of companies and getting advice from them about what the best option will be.

“This is one of the biggest problems any marina could face, it’s sad but that’s just life and we’re positive that this will all get resolved.”
