WEST Somerset’s MP has said he will not become complacent in his efforts to stop boozed-up Butlin’s visitors causing chaos in Minehead.

Mr Liddell-Grainger paid a visit to the holiday resort on Saturday evening along with police to see efforts they and staff at the resort are taking to control rowdy behaviour.

The County Gazette reported in July how drunken louts had been scaring families out of the town centre with their ‘threatening’ and ‘rowdy’ behaviour.

They had written to Mr Liddell- Grainger with their concerns and he vowed to do what he could to make sure the issue was tackled.

“I went out this weekend with the police around the town and spoke to some of the shop owners and some of the bouncers on the door,” he said.

“It was an exceptionally busy weekend in the town because not only was it an adult weekend at Butlin’s but the Festival was also taking place at the train station.

“I was very pleased with what I saw. I know it’s a bit colder now but people did appear to be dressed properly and there wasn’t a lot of trouble.

“But not at any stage will I be complacent with this issue. I will be keeping an eye on it and I will continue to go out and see for myself what is going on.”

Mr Liddell-Grainger added that he was pleased with the efforts Butlin’s staff were making and with the patrols from the police.

He said: “There are police at both ends of the town patrolling and they are being very proactive about this situation.

“Butlin’s actually have signs telling people that if they go out into Minehead to be respectful, the staff make sure they’re dressed appropriately if they leave the site, and take their alcohol off them again when leaving the site.”

Julian Highfield, resort director at Butlin’s said: “We are always pleased to welcome Mr Liddell-Grainger onto resort at any time – as part of our ongoing efforts to work with all the local organisations and the people of the town in general – to ensure we continue to enjoy the same harmonious relationship we have had for many years.

“My team at Butlin’s will always do their utmost to ensure our guests have a wonderful time, and also that the town and resort as a whole feel the benefit of our presence.”
