SPECIAL guests were invited to the launch of the Somerset and Bristol Poppy Appeal at the West Somerset Railway to thank them for all the work they do for the charity.

This year the launch was entitled ‘The Evacuation’ and around 350 guests were treated to a train ride from Bishops Lydeard to Minehead Station aboard a steam train decorated with a large poppy on the front.

The day was organised for members of the Royal British Legion, poppy organisers, collectors and other volunteers to the appreciation for the work they put in to help fund the £1.4 million the Royal British Legion spends on welfare every week.

On their arrival at Minehead Station, the guests were greeted by a Corps of Drums by the Devon & Somerset Fire and Rescue Service Ceremonial Unit.

“The day went absolutely amazingly and everyone had a fantastic time,” said Adam Brown, community fundraiser for Somerset.

“We had three coaches full of members from the Bristol area and around 200 members from all over the county.”

Everyone enjoyed lunch and entertainment at the Minehead Golf Club before returning to the station for their journeys home.

The fundraising target for Somerset and Bristol is £1million which will go towards the Legion’s national target of £40 million to continue its vital work delivering care and support to the Armed Forces community.

This year marks 100 years since the start of the First World War and the birth of the poppy as a symbol of remembrance and hope.

Alistair Maxwell, area manager for the Royal British Legion in Somerset, said: “As we mark the centenary of the First World War, it is as important as ever to wear a poppy and remember the sacrifices and commitment made by our Armed Forces both then and now.

“The message behind this year’s Poppy Appeal is Live On – to the memory of the fallen and future of the living, which captures perfectly why it’s so important to donate to the appeal and wear a poppy.”
