WEST Somerset welcomed Avon and Somerset Police and Crime Commissioner Sue Mountstevens on her latest community out and about day.

Ms Mountstevens visited Watchet last Thursday to find out more about their newly installed CCTV camera set-up.

West Somerset Council and Watchet Town Council worked together to install 13 surveillance cameras in key locations across the town in August, 2014.

The camera system is monitored by police volunteers in the CCTV control room at the police station in Minehead.

The capital cost of the project was funded with money from the Police and Crime Commissioner, and West Somerset Council, with the town council agreeing to meet future running costs.

Ms Mountstevens said: “I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to Watchet, and meeting the Mayor and local councillors.

“It’s great to not only hear how the Community Safety Grant funding is helping the local community, but also to be able to physically see it helping keep local people safe and feeling safe.

“It’s only by visiting the local community and speaking to local people that I can be the voice of local people and ensure that the voice of the local community is represented.”

On her arrival in Watchet the PCC met local councillors to see the new CCTV systems in action.

Cllr Loretta Whetlor, Mayor of Watchet, said: “It was such an honour to meet Sue Mountstevens, and show her around our quaint and lovely town.

“Watchet Town Council is very grateful for the funding the PCC provided from the Community Safety Budget to enable a CCTV system to be installed in Watchet.

“It contributes to a safe environment for us all to work and live in.

“We all found Sue Mountstevens to be very approachable and the opportunity to discuss town matters face to face with her was very welcome.”
